Laura Fiume was born in Urbino, Northern Italy, on August 10, 1953. Her artistic education took place at the Liceo Artistico and at the Polytechnic School of Design in Milan, to continue with well known artist Salvatore Fiume, her Father, in his Canzo former Spinning Mill, near Como, where she learned painting, serigraphy, and ceramics. Her first exhibition was in Milan in 1978, a one - theme event sponsored by Atkinson's for their Impulse perfume launch, where Laura presented a series of collages inspired by the butterfly as a symbol of perfume. An important exhibition of hers in a public space was at Palazzo dell'Arengario in Milan, in 1985. Also quite important was the exhibition she had in Venice, Italy, in 1987 at the Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali, Piazza San Marco. Later laura also exhibited in New York, Southampton (N.Y.), Basel (Switzerland), Los Angeles, Tokyo, and St. Paul de Vance (France). Her activity in ceramics, started in 1983, was first oriented towards the production of numbered pieces only, later to be extended to that of pottery for home daily use. After presenting her ceramics for the first time in 1983 at the work's II Gallery of Southampton (N.Y.), she continued her collaboration with that Gallery until 1988. Japan was also the main destination of her oil paintings between 1990 and 1992. The exhibition of paintings on the "Mirrors" theme at the Galleria Artesanterasmo of Milan in 1990, was the main destination of her oil paintings between 1990 and 1992. Laura's collaboration with the Galleria Artesanterasmo has been active since 1988. Between 1992 and 2000 she had her own show-room in Milan where her collections of ceramics and her creations for prestigious firms like Ricchetti (tiles), Fedecheti (home fabrics), Edilkamin (fireplaces and stoves), Kaigai (textiles for clothings and bathroom towels), and Rosenthal (china) were on display. The Proserpio company have chosen a series of fabrics designed by Laura as the exclusive pattern for their bed-room furnishings. Laura Fiume has also illustrated two books for children published by the Edizioni San Paolo, with whom she also collaborated with her drawings for their G-Baby magazine. In the past ten years she has designed a number of pieces of furniture to order, and has carried out a number of wall decorations in following an idea from noted architect Pepe Tanzi, in 1992 Laura Fiume collaborated with Pozzi & Verga to the launch of their new collections of chairs and tables by representing them in her paintings in an interplay with her well known images of cats and dogs.In 1995 she was chosen as designer of the year by Meyer Mayor, the distinguished Swiss company specialized in kitchen and table linen production. In 1999 she increased her show-room space by creating "Atelier Produzioni d'Arte" where prints, ceramics, and sculptures from European and American artists were presented. In 2000 Laura designed a coffee-cup collection called "The Jungle Collection" for Cellini Deutschland Gmbh and resumed her collaboration with Kaigai Inc., Japan by designing their new collection, including clothing and accessories. In 2000 Laura began her collaboration with Raika of Japan designing their fashion collections which since 2002 have been on dispaly in the "Show-Room Laura Fiume" at the Mitsokushi Department Store of Nihonbashi. In February, 2000 Laura held an exhibition at the Galleria Artesanterasmo of Milan where she presented for the first time her oils on velvet which marked a major change in the evolution of her creative language. In April 2002 she exhibited at the Galleria "Il Gianicolo" of Perugia and at the "Stazione Leopolda" in Florence within the Pitti Immagine exhibition. In April 2003 Laura held a large exhibition at the Spazio Extè of Milan, entitled 'More Rooms: a Tribute to Philippe Starck' as part of the events that took place along with the Salone del Mobile" of Milan; an exhibition which continued in the following weeks at the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan. In June 2003 Laura held a one-artist at the Svetog Krsevana Gallery in Sibenik, Kroatia as part of the International Children's Festival of that town. In August 2004 Laura Fiume held an exhibition at the Galleria Canci of Lerici, Italy. In 2005 she gave her contribution to the restyling of the l'Arenella Hotel on the Isola del Giglio, Tuscany, by providing a number of enlarged images of her works which have become the characterizing element of the visual impact of the hotel's interiors. Laura's collaboration with the Vartai Art Gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania began in April 2005 when the exhibition "Four Italian Painters in Vilnius" was presented there in collaboration with the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan. In July 2005 Laura held a one person exhibition at the Vartay Gallery. Still in April 2005, as part of the project "Ten Arm-chairs for Ten Artists" by Molteni & C., a leading Italian furniture company, Laura Fiume presented an installation which included an arm-chair from the "Reversi" collection decorated by her and a number of paintings of hers on fabric usually covering Molteni arm-chairs and couches. A catalogue attached to the November 2006 issue of "Arte" magazine documented as many as three exhibitions held by Laura Fiume in that year. The first one, called Visual Amplifications was held in Fiesole, near Florence, in the museum within the building of the St. Alexander Basilica. The second one, entitled Private Stories, took place in Sansepolcro, Tuscany and was split in two parts: one at the Piero della Francesca city museum, the other at the Galleria la Loggia. The third exhibition, entitled, Trame d'Interni (plots in interiors) was hosted in Milan by the Artesanterasmo Gallery where Laura presented her new paintings on fabrics provided by Enzo degli Angiuoni, a leader in Europe in the production of fabrics for furniture factories. On April 2007 she decorated the cow "Fish Cow" for the "Cow Parade" event in Milan. In 2006 Laura also dedicated herself to a partial restoration of the former Spinning Mill in Canzo, where her studio is located and where part of her works are exhibited. The idea of opening to the public that 19th century building, where Father and daughter worked for fifty and thirty years respectively, came after the success of the first opening on request of fFi (the national trust for italy) for their traditional spring day in March 2006. Now the "Filanda" can be visited by appointment. Her work is documented in a number of monographs and in various culture, fashion, and furnishings magazines such as: AD, Affari & Finanza, Anna, Arredo, Arte, Amica, Bazar, Brava Casa, Capital, Casa Amica, Casa Idea, City Map & Dom (Russia), Class, Classic Living, Donna, Donna Moderna, Domus, Dove, Elle, Elle Decor, Espansione, Firma, Gioia, Gioia Casa, Glamour, Grazia, Gente Viaggi, Hogares (Spain), Hotel & Maisons, Il Giornale, Il Giorno, Interni, Io Donna, Kult, L'Arca, La Repubblica, La Mia Casa, Lietuvos Rytas (Lithuania) Luna, L'Uomo Vogue, Marieclaire, MF Fashion, Master Meeting, Panorama, Sette, Stilius (Lithuania), Stilius Plius (Lithuania), Ville e Casali, Ville e Giardini, Vogue Bambini, Vogue Italia, Zomonès (Lithuania) and in a few Japanese magazines. Since her Father's death, in 1997, Laura has been collaborating with her brother Luciano, her husband Paolo Ruocco and the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan to the organization of Salvatore Fiume's retrospectives and to the authentication of his works.
